Four Phrases That Will Cost You in the Job Interview

Posted August 29th, 2018

A job interview is your chance to seal the deal and land a great new career opportunity. Unfortunately, far too many people make mistakes in the interview process that end up costing them a chance at the job of their dreams.

You don’t want to be one of those interviewees who unknowingly makes an error that ends your candidacy for a job. One of the key ways to make sure a faux pas in the interview doesn’t cost you a position is to avoid phrases that employers see as red flags. In particular, four phrases that could cost you in your interview include:

I don’t like my previous company.

Even if your past company truly was terrible, the hiring manager you’re interviewing with doesn’t know the inner workings of the organization. If you complain about the company being bad, the hiring manager is likely to come to the conclusion you are the problem and will worry you’ll be criticizing their own company

I can’t do that or I don’t know how to do that.

You don’t want to come across as being unprepared to handle the job tasks. Instead of taking a negative approach when asked about whether you can do a particular task, talk about all of the things you have accomplished that are similar and explain how you’re a fast learner who loves to embrace new techniques or tools.

What does your company do?

Asking what a company does when you come in for an interview will make you come across as disinterested and unprepared. You should research exactly what the business does, so you are prepared to ask informed questions and show off why you would be a good fit for the team.

I want to make X amount of money.

Salary questions will eventually need to be addressed, but asking about what the pay is too early – or making demands –makes you come across as someone who only cares what the company can do for you. You don’t want to be greedy, you want to show you are eager to make a contribution.
